When the maniac is betting behind you, let the maniac take charge of the betting. Check or only put out minimum bets and let the maniac do the raising, which you can call with your power hand.

Next, be patient. Wait for power hands after folding a few minimum gets; take note of position strategies, and then wait for a monster hand. Based on your position, check or call the maniac. When you are confident you hand is best, seek to check-raise when betting ahead of the maniac, or re-raise when the maniac bets in front of you. Remember this when you’re playing online poker.

In poker, putting your opponents on tough decisions is most often the winning strategy. The squeeze play is one way to make your opponents uncomfortable about remaining in contention for the pot. By putting on the squeeze, you can often force both opponents to fold.

Three of a kind is a poker hand comprised of three cards of the same rank, with two other unpaired cards. It beats two pair and one pair, and loses to straights, flushes, and better.

Three of a kind is also known as trips and a set, depending on the nature of the three of a kind. Herein, a set would be referring to a pair in the hole that then picks up a third of the same off the community board, whereas trips refers to a single card in the hole that is then joined by two of the same rank on the board. A set has a slightly higher application value in that it is less likely that the poker opponent has also flopped the same set, but in showdown both are the same in nature.

The value of three of a kind is determined by the rank of the cards, wherein 9 9 9 would beat 8 8 8, and 10 10 10 would beat 9 9 9, etc. In the event that two players have the same three of a kind, the showdown then goes to the rank of the kicker cards, with the highest value of the kicker prevails over a lower kicker value. 4 4 4 9 8 would therefore beat 4 4 4 8 7, and so on. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.

A brief for a posh poker tournament in Switzerland flew across my desk today, and it looked pretty cool. Free food, incredible location, and great fun all around (mountains? Poker? Money? Yes please!).

After that, I considered the entire island of Japan. I could play anywhere there and be pretty much pleased as punch. It’s the culture, the language, the love of the poker cards that exists there and in other Asian countries thanks to poker greats like Johnny Chan.

But beyond that I started to falter. There are PLENTY of places to hit the tables in Europe and the US and even South America! What’s a guy to do?
