Lord Mandelson’s net piracy prevention plan is not being welcomed by the UK public, as survey results show. A huge majority of people have said they do not favour the proposed government regulations aimed at curbing illegal downloads and piracy over the net.

The regulations were drafted after voluble pleas came from copyright owners to help them stay in business in the face of increasing illegal download and file sharing that were ruining their market. Severe punitive action was called for, primarily by the music industry, which is one of the worst hit by such illegal activities. In response, the government came up with a set of regulations that allowed the disconnection of the suspected offender’s internet service.

YouGov gathered public opinion on this issue for the first time with its recent poll. A majority of people surveyed, 70% to be exact, thought that offenders should get a fair hearing in a court of law if suspected of any such activity. Without fair trial, the disconnection of broadband on mere suspicion was thought to be highly unfair. A mere 16% agreed with plans to disconnect or throttle bandwidth.

The poll results show clearly that any such action by the government will render it highly unpopular with the voting segment that uses broadband internet regularly and intensively. A significant 31% of voters may turn away from a government that supports such a stand.

Providers like TalkTalk and T-Mobile, who were always against the proposed regulations, received strong support with the findings of the poll. The contention of these providers is that government interference will dampen growth and prevent further innovations in the industry. In addition, WiFi hijackers may still escape unpunished by using the accounts of innocent customers for illegal purposes, leaving unsuspecting victims holding the bag.

Many British musicians including Lily Allen and George Michael have raised concerns against the growing piracy of music. Recently they were all part of a meeting lasting nearly 3 hours, where they tried to devise ways to tackle the problem of piracy. Annie Lennox, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and Radiohead guitarist Ed O’ Brien all took part in the discussion.

A previous discussion on this issue had resulted in a public fallout, which became a media frenzy. Meanwhile Lily Allen was severely criticised for her personal blog entry, which carried her passionate views regarding piracy. Following the criticism, she had declined to participate in this meeting. But she turned up at the venue nevertheless and did make quite a few remarks with the other artistes, but was not available for an interview later.

Throttling of bandwidth was agreed upon by all to be the best solution to tackle online piracy. Bandwidth restrictions will make illegal downloading difficult for users, while it will not affect other activities like browsing and mailing. This solution was claimed by the members of the meeting to be a better alternative for controlling online piracy than termination of connections.

The meeting also decided the manner of implementation of this solution, wherein the illegal file-sharer would first be issued two letters as warnings. However, if file sharing does not stop after these two cautionary alerts, then restrictive action in the form of bandwidth strangulation would be carried out.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson had made a similar suggestion when he had said that temporarily suspension of internet connections should be carried out only when all other methods to restrain illegal file-sharers fail. Because the internet has become a basic need for most of us, and with the advent of mobile broadband and networks offering free laptop deals, it can be accessed whenever and wherever a person wants, this makes the thought of people not being allowed access extraordinary.

In the past few weeks, O2’s customers have been facing different network problems, particularly relating to data access.

About a month back, there was a data crash due to which users of the O2 network could not access the internet, e-mails, or text. The cause for problems in data access was attributed to faults in a GPRS satellite. O2 had addressed the difficulties in just a few hours and a company spokesperson had stated then that engineers had been successful in reinstating data access for a large number of its customers, and that they were undertaking all measures to enable the remaining customers to access the internet without unnecessary delay.

The next problem occurred just a couple of days after the first one, when users trying to access the O2 network from overseas had no data or voice access. This time again O2 engineers found the underlying cause of the issue and as usual, a company spokesperson reported that the company was taking the required steps for resolving the problem. The spokesperson further stated that the company anticipated restoration of services for users who were still facing problems, and even apologised for it.

However, now customers of O2 are facing problems with network for the third time in a short span. The Register, a news web site, has issued information stating that O2 is facing network issues that are affecting “some” customers. However, reports suggest that O2’s network is not accepting 2G and 3G connections even in areas separated by large distances such as Liverpool and Brighton. This proves that the network problem is not limited to one region.

The service provider has again stated that the issue has been resolved but has not disclosed the reason of the problem this time. People are expecting O2 to get back to its feet by taking concrete measures to rectify its technical complications at the earliest. Mobile phone and MP3 player have lost out to the internet as the greatest invention of modern times. This was revealed by a new nationwide poll released by the Intellectual Property Office and conducted by YouGov. The survey sample was 1,977 adults out of which a significant 37 percent voted in favour of the internet.

An exhibition at the Science Museum in London called “Cracking Ideas” had intended to use the questionnaire to mark its opening. The exhibition was featuring Wallace and Gromit, the fictional inventors. It was for this purpose that the Intellectual Property Office and Aardman Animations joined hands to find out which recent invention is considered the most important by the people in the UK.

The wind-up radio inventor, Trevor Baylis, commented that broadband has a major part to play in the belief that the internet is the best invention of the recent times. According to him, the exceptional growth of networking sites and superfast broadband networks have made the internet a necessity and something that people feel they can’t live without.

If newer and faster broadband offerings continue to hit the market, the internet is likely to remain on the top of the list of inventions for quite some time to come. For more info on the latest broadband offerings, take a look at Broadband Genie - a website all about broadband.

Baylis also talked about the relevance of invention in the growth of a country’s economy. He felt that the focus should be on developing and protecting innovations of all kinds. The future generations should be encouraged to become inventors.

Yet again Korea seems to be gearing up to make UK’s plan to establish a fast broadband network seem like a child’s play. The Korean Communications Commission is aiming for a mega fast 1 Gb service, which puts into perspective the huge event made out of Virgin Media’s 50 Mb fixed-line broadband service launch and Bournemouth residents fighting their way to get their hands on the newly launched 100 Mb fibre optic trial.

The 100 Mb speed, already available in Korea, is a boon to most Koreans, including the country’s eager online gaming community. UK, until now, has not been able to provide broadband connectivity at this speed.

The commission has decided to improve its IT infrastructure, by allocating US $24.6 billion for development of the new service. It hopes to have the service up and running by 2012, and with such ambitious plans, around 120,000 jobs would get created.

The other piece of good news for the Koreans is the wireless broadband network in the country also set for a boost. The Korean Communications Commission will improve the wireless service, and make it capable of handling speeds up to 10MB.

For a quick reality check, test the speed of your broadband connection at home to find out how far we are from the 100 Mb goal!

Fortunately for computer users things have moved forward over the last couple of years. Those wanting to use a computer are no longer tied to making use of a landline for Internet connection or trying to deal with dial-up speeds for laptops connecting while on the move.

Luckily now with the use of dongles laptops can connect almost anywhere at fast broadband speeds. A good place to compare the different faster broadband speeds available with different company’s packages is BroadbandGenie.com.
