THE COVER LETTER

made easy!

——————————-

You have completed your ms , and now what?

You may ask yourself:
How can I submit it to publishers?
How can I present it?

Here comes the cover letter.
What is a cover letter?

It is a letter that goes with your work. You can’t send your work alone. You need to say something about it and about yourself in the cover letter.

This letter is very important as it is this document that will persuade prospective editors/publishers to read your work.

It is not difficult to write a cover letter, but you should be careful not to omit any essential info. If you don’t do it right, you can’t expect success.

I will help you do it right. If I can write a cover letter, you can do it, too. It’s easy .

Let’s get started!

•First write your name , address and contact number/e-mail on the right side of an A4 sheet.

•Next, write the editor/publisher’s name and address on the left side , below your personal info.

•Write the date on the right side.

•Start with : Dear Mr/Ms -name of publisher

It’s better to write the name of the publisher if you know it. If you don’t, start with: Dear Sir/Madam

•Keep in mind that the letter is formal. Don’t use any contractions such as I’m or it’s.

•Now you can add the first paragraph. It goes like this:

‘I enclose the synopsis of my book/article and I wonder if you would be interested in it.’

•Now give the publisher sufficient info about your book/article. Tell him in 1-2 lines the content of your book/article.

e.g. Let us suppose you’ve written a book about Turtles.

You can write:

TURTLES is about keeping and caring for turtle pets indoors.

Now you should tell him why the people are going to read such a book, and who is going to buy it.

e.g. TURTLES is a pet book that would interest children from 8-16 years old, and all pet lovers as well. This book is original because it is written with children at that age in mind , and it is practical and easy to read.

•You must convince the publisher that you are qualified to write on the subject.

e.g. ‘ This book is based on my own experience in turtle
breeding. Or ‘ I have worked in a pet shop for two years…’ . You can add any experience you’ve had on this subject. Ask yourself:

Any other experience relevant?
Any studies?
Any research?

•Be brief and informative. One page of an A4 sheet is enough.

•Now, if you wish, mention in your letter that you also enclose a sample chapter of your book.

e.g ‘I also enclose a list of chapters and a sample
chapter for you to read.’

The cover letter usually goes with a synopsis, a sample

chapter and a list of chapters.

This is the complete proposal package and I always do so myself. However, you can send a cover letter and a synopsis only, but be prepared to have a sample chapter ready whenever you are asked to by a publisher to submit it.

It usually takes a lot of time before you get a reply, so you may as well send the whole package to save time.

•State that you enclose a s.a.e ( a second envelope that is stamped and addressed to yourself). They are not going to reply if you don’t enclose this.

•Close the letter. Be polite.

e.g. ‘ Thank you for your time.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest

convenience.

Yours sincerely

Your full name

Your e-mail address

•If you wish to use the internet to submit your work, follow the same procedure-of course there’s no need for a s.a.e.

Before you submit any work ,read the regulations thoroughly . Some publishers do not accept sample work via e-mail!

Now, you are ready to write your own cover letter.

GOOD LUCK!

1. DERRY

Derry or “Londonderry”, to give it its formal title,
boasts some of the most beautiful women to be found
anywhere on the planet, with Belfast running a close
second. That probably explains why Derry men are crazier
than most and Belfast men crazier than anybody. Derry
however, has a colorful history every bit as interesting
as its indigenous beauties. Each issue of our Newsletter
will offer a little snippet or two of information on the
subject (history, that is) about which, especially since
the onset of the “troubles”, numerous learned tomes have
been written.
_________________________________________________________
_ Derry gets its name from the ancient Irish word “daire”
meaning an oak grove. The oak tree was venerated by the
Celts and is likely that Druids used the grove for their
rituals. The “daire” was situated on a crannog or small
island in the river Foyle. As the waters receded, the
surrounding area turned into bogland, whence derives the
name Bogside. The hill itself once boasted a fortress not
unlike that overlooking Lough Swilly called the Grianan
of Aileach.

In the sixth century Saint Colmcille (Columba 521-597)
established a monastery on the hill. There is no proof of
this, but it is more than likely, as founding monasteries
was what Columba liked to do best. This, of course,
attracted people to live nearby and so the settlement
grew.

The monastery indeed was intact well into the 17th
century when the colonists arrived from Scotland and
England. Derrys boomtime however, was in the 12th and
13th centuries when the MacLochlainn dynasty moved in.
They used their wealth to build the settlement up and
when they died out, Derry fell into decline. It was not
until the arrival of the De Burgos that relative
prosperity returned to the growing town. The skeleton on
Derry’s coat of arms derives from the De Burgos.

2. EDITORIAL.

The Bogside Artists are a mysterious trio to many. Ergo,
let me introduce us. As this will take up more space than
I feel entitled to use, I’ll be brief. In our NEXT
Newsletter, you will find a fuller and more comprehensive
edition at our website. We will even have our own photos!
Consider this a mere introduction.

KEVIN
Kevin Hasson’s formal education began with The Christian
Brothers school in the Brandywell area of the city. It
later moved to the Creggan and renamed itself St. Peters.
That was in the early `70’s. “Art even then, was the
thing I was most interested in”, he says. “My dad was a
very talented man who used his skills and imagination to
entertain us. Creativity therefore, as a bulwark against
poverty, constituted the environment I grew up in.”

For his first ever trip abroad Kevin found himself on a
relief mission to the starving of Calcutta. It was an
experience that transformed him. In Frankfurt, he met
his American wife to be. Once married, he settled down
in America. Finally, he returned home with his family.

He wasn’t home a fortnight when he linked up once more
with Tom, whom he had first met at St. Peters. Art was
the thing they had most in common. Kevin and Tom both
play guitar. Kevin likes old movies.

TOM
Apart from several brief stays in England, Tom Kelly has
spent all of his life in the Bogside, where he still
lives. He is, in fact, leader of a small non-
denominational Christian church called “Wellspring” in
the heart of The Bogside. Part of Wellspring’s agenda is
to explore all aspects of Irish culture, particularly
where it addresses the pure Christian message. Wellspring is
self-sufficient and uses The Bogside Artists’ studio for
its meetings.

Prior to joining forces with his brother William, and his
pal Kevin, Tom worked for ten years in cross-community art
projects in the city as a means for getting the two
communities to understand one another. He was a pioneer
in the field. Tom says: “Our society has done incalculable
harm to our natural pride and sense of self-worth.
Christianity addresses this.” Tom has completed many murals
in the city that depicted life, as it existed a long time ago.
He called these `heritage murals’. They were made for schools,
hospitals and community centers.

Tom is a fine singer and musician and has produced
Wellspring’s one and only CD, a compilation of well-known
Irish gigs and a few original numbers from Wellspring’s
composers.

WILLIAM
Tom’s older brother William Kelly also worked in England.
First he went to Queens University after a formal
education at St.Columbs College. St.Columbs incidentally
boasts no less than TWO Nobel Prize winners - Seamus Heaney
and John Hume. Renowned playwright Brian Friel was also educated there.

William decided to leave uni and went to Carlisle,
England, to work as a Post Office counter clerk, which
lasted a year. His intention was to `grow up’. “Happily,
I failed,” he says.

Teaming up with his brother Tom and Kevin to form The
Bogside Artists was a natural progression.
William likes to read and paint and has little time left
for anything else. He is married and spends his time
between Australia and Ireland.

3. ON THE GRAPEVINE

Sad days for some in Derry. The old stalwarts who were in
regular receipt of funding from the Derry City council
have been axed this year. The purse strings are
tightening. We, of course, have never received a penny
and it seems that this time around, our “chances are very
slim” according to one official. We are shocked, of
course.
__________________________________________________________

4. OUR DIARY

Recently we have organized our group along more
professional lines with a management committee and
everything. That means, when we apply for funding, we
might conceivably be taken seriously. In the meantime, we
concern ourselves with our next murals. The first of
these will begin at the end of May. There will be three
more in toto, and you can follow our progress with all
three. You can be sure that this section of our
newsletter will gradually take pre-eminence over all
others.
_________________________________________________________

So now you know all about us! Our intention is to
complete the remaining three murals for the Bogside. It
will be an open-air gallery, unique of its kind. Our
Newsletters, of which this is the first, will keep you
informed of our progress; and in the “Diary” section
especially, you will read about the bizarre and wonderful
events that unfold, as we go about making our
murals……because what actually happens to The Bogside
Artists, on a day to day basis, is a helluva lot funnier
than anything we could make up. Also, we will be able to
post photos taken in situ on our Newsletter so that you
can get a real intimation of what it is like to work as a
muralist in Derry! On that promising note, I bid you
adieu and wish you, on behalf of Tom, Kevin and myself, a
very happy day.

Many established poets published themselves initially, some of them do so continually. In the literary arena that currently exists this is very acceptable and respected. But before you consider self-publishing consider the following.

Does your poetry hold universal appeal?

You can determine whether or not your poetry holds universal appeal by joining a few well-established poetry forums that offer critiquing from a variety of other poets and poetry readers. Search around first. Explore the forum for the quality of work that is being exchanged there and the quality of feedback that is being offered. Bring your hard hat and leave your sensitivity checked at the door. You want legitimate critiquing, not something to make you feel good. You want to ensure that your poetry meets and exceeds the norm. If it does not you may want to continue to write poetry for your own enjoyment, but not labor with the issue of publication.

Is your poetry extremely well received by your poetic peers?

Within the forums where you have been developing your craft you are receiving extremely good reviews. If this is the case, and the reviews are not just from the friends you have established within the forum, but due to the quality of your work (you will honestly know the difference), start to set aside the ones that have been best received. You might want to take them though even deeper critiques in more sophisticated poetry workshops, but bring them to the highest level you can. If they continue to receive good feedback you will almost certainly want to include them in your book ultimately, but you will now want to submit them to publications.

Submit to Publications.

Submit your work to reputable Literary and Poetry eZines and print publications. There are hundreds of eZines online that you can submit to. Do a little research. Look at what they are publishing and if you feel they might be receptive to your work submit to them. The same with print publications. When you receive notification that your poem(s) has been accepted this will be the first bona fide signal you get that publication of your first volume of poetry is a good idea.

Publishing!

If you are not trying to reach the mass publishing marketplace, but want mostly to have a printed collection of your poetry to offer to a more limited audience, consider having a small collection of your poetry printed in Chapbook form. Chapbooks are great to sell after poetry readings because you can usually price them very reasonably, and great as gifts, introductions to you as a poet in other literary circumstances, and just overall rewarding to your literary pursuits.

If you want to publish a book of poetry you should try to have a collection of 70 or more. For a book to find its way onto the bookstore shelf it will need to be perfect bound, have a thick enough spine that all of its title, author and publisher infomation is visible on it, and the back must have ISBN information and pricing. My first book of poetry, You Beckon, is 88 pages and meets all of that criteria.www.barnesandnobel.com

There is a wonderful free publication entitled Publishing Basics: A Guide for the Small Press and Independent Self-Publisher by Robert Bowie Johnson, Jr. It is available from RJ Communications and can be requested online from http://www.BooksJustBooks.com. It will take you step-by-step through everything you’ll need to know to get your book from your head to the shelf!

It can be done! I did it following the information outlined above. I chose to publish a book rather than a chapbook. My book, You Beckon, has received numerous honors including the Best Poetry Book for 2003 from Mahogany Book Club (Albany, New York)and spent over six months (in 2004) as the most requested result under Poetry Inspirational on Amazon.com. It has not been easy and truthfully, it has not been exceptionally profitable, but it has been personally rewarding. You can do it too. Start now!

I hope this has been helpful and encouraging!

A blog is the best tool in your Internet marketing arsenal. Why? Search engines spider (check for updates) blogs more often than the average website. The reason for this is that blogs provide a continuous stream of new content from the author plus reader comments.

Three Big Reasons Why You Should Blog

Reason #1: A blog gives your book more exposure on the web, thanks to pinging services (pingomatic.com) that alert the search engine spiders and newsfeeds every time you post a new entry. You also have the option of submitting your site to the top blog and RSS feed directories for an even wider exposure for your book. Another resource is Blog Explosion, which is a traffic exchange service. For every blog you read, someone else will read yours.

With a website, you are limited to submitting your site yourself or paying submission service to do it for you. Then you can only submit once a month without any guarantee that your site will get listed. Submitting more than once will run you the risk of getting blacklisted as a spammer.

Reason #2: A blog not only establishes your expertise in your genre/topic, but allows you to build one-on-one relationships with your readers. Your blog is an excellent tool to build your fan base. Take the time to answer your reader’s comments. Once you develop a relationship with them, the more likely they will buy your book. If they like your book, well . . . need I say more? I was surprised to find that very few bloggers take the time to network with their readers.

Also, search the major blog directories for blogs that interest you and participate in their discussions. Enter the URL of your blog or website in your signature. Then offer intelligent feedback on the topic being discussed. Don’t pop in with a “hi, bye” comment. That’s considered comment spam, which is frowned upon in the blogging community.

You can also use your blog to build a subscriber base for your email (or snail mail) newsletter. Or, you your blog up to be an online newsletter, posting articles as well as blog entries. With email spam so rampant, this is the best way to go. The search engine spiders will love you. Your readers will love you. Everybody will be happy.

Reason #3: The more your blog grows in popularity, the more inbound links you’ll get from other bloggers/readers. If you link your website to your blog, this will help boost the search engine ranking for your website, which will give more readers to the opportunity to buy your book.

How long will it take to build your blog’s popularity? I’ve read that it takes about a year to build a solid readership. That’s the average. Your blog may take off . . . or fail altogether.

Don’t start a blog with the sole purpose of sell, sell, sell. That’s the guaranteed failure formula. Another guarantee for failure is spending too much time blogging and not enough time writing your book. I spend an average of five hours per week on my blogs, dividing my time between writing/posting content and promoting it.

The key to a blog’s success is content, useful and valuable content that your readers will benefit from. Allow them to get to know you, and take the time to get to know them. Find out what they want and give it to them. That’s the success formula.

Persuasive copywriting is what draws the attention of prospective customers. They see your product and are drawn it. But what makes this happen? What words can win a customer over without having them laugh at overstatements and hype? Persuasive copywriting is the style of writing that every business needs in order to get customers to purchase something.

Online, there is a large market for individuals who can write in a persuasive style. Sure, everyone has their own specific style, but the only thing that truly matters is sales. Unless the words draw the customer in and help them to make a purchase, the words are wasted. If the customer has a dollar to spend, he will spend it on your website or on another. The words that are on that page are what will make the ultimate decision as to whether the customer stays or goes. It is that simple.

But what makes the sale to the potential buyer? This information changes with the specific product. And, in all cases, it is up to the writer to determine the best method for getting the attention and securing the sale. It is not up to the business owner to do this, but up to their writer to know the right words to use.

For those who are looking for a career in copywriting, they will need to prove themselves time and time again. Just because it sounds good does not mean that it is the most beneficial to the website. The freelance position is often the most sought after since many businesses like to have a one on one relationship with their writers. This helps them to establish the text that they feel is most beneficial.

The good news is that those who are effective at what they do will likely have business come back to them time and time again. Once a comfortable relationship is established, freelance workers can count on having more business come their way. The power of the word is the most important qualification to these individuals.

For those looking to begin their career, they will need to possess truly powerful words - persuasive copywriting words.

If you haven’t yet learned about betting hall odds, do please read on… A description of a betting saloon is a building that presents betting. Aficionados will take a risk by challenging the slot-machines or alternative games. Betting establishment games mainly include ovious balances informing them which maintain that the organization holds on to the upper hand above the gaming fans.

A huge number of casino games can result in you becoming obsessed speedily. For instance the simple 1-armed bandit, a coin eating contraption with three or more drums which rotate if an arm affixed to it is started. The machine generally returns in correlation to a row of symbols observable on the dials on the appliance. Disastrously, betting saloon games allow an appearance of staying in control, effectively deluding the gaming enthusiast — the addressee is provided with judgments, but in actual fact these will never match the client’s longterm handicap. This is caused by the the gaming hall not paying out the full stake as hoped for. This theory is often found in popular casino games such as five-card stud, craps, roulette or blackjack.

Seven-card stud is undeniably a very popular casino game. The gaming devotees, playing with fully covered hands, make wagers into a central pot that is bestowed onto the winning player holding the highest set of cards. (And as eveyone knows, the shameless bluff may well prevail as well…) Quite like seven card stud, blackjack is also an incredibly popular casino pastime. A lavish portion of its celebrity is by virtue of its peculiar mix of chance and ingenuity & decision making, not to mention a process tagged Card Counting. The aforementioned is an approach by which betting devotees will switch the odds of the game to their personal profit by both betting and fundamental decisions in agreement with the hands shown.

“Craps” is another well known game using the roll of dice. Gamesters bet on the score of 1 cycle, or on a string of cycles of 2 dice. Contrary to blackjack, there isn’t any proven killer strategy punters could exercise to beat the odds. Roulette is a celebrated gambling pastime. Here, a croupier whirls a roulette wheel which holds a set of thirty-seven (as in French roulette) or thirty eight (American or Vegas roulette) independently tagged places in which the white pellet will settle, which is the winning number and the other chances that will go along with it. If the gamer wagers on a specific number which hits it in other words they’re really having a lucky day, the set bounty is 35 to 1, the initial bet proper being given back. Ergo in total the original wager is multiplied by 36.

Do your best to be very on the watch as well as such gaming establishment gambling pastimes are considered rather obsessive. An incredible number of lives have been wrecked due to uncontrolled gambling + whereas it undeniably seems enjoyable, do please endeavor to govern yourself.

I was speaking to a good friend of mine who operates
many businesses online and he just happened to mention
that he gets many of his ideas from eBay.

Even more intriguing, he told me that he could tell
how much of a given product was selling on eBay.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’ve been trying to
figure out how to tap into eBay sales information for
months now - but there just doesn’t seem to be any
way….

Until, this know-it-all let me know the simple, yet
highly effective method he uses…

**************************************************
SIDEBAR:

Learn how Terrance turns 57-minutes each week into
huge monthly income from eBay — as much as
$8,175.55 Per Month!

http://www.highertrustmarketing.com/part/terrance
***************************************************

First, it is worth noting that you can get a summary of
the hottest categories selling on eBay. While this is
somewhat useful in locating trends and broad areas of
interest, there is a more useful way to use the auction
center to test your own ideas.

Start by searching eBay for your keyword term + ebook.

For example, if you are trying to test “dog training”,
then you would enter “dog training ebook” in your
search.

In most cases you will find at least one example, and in
many cases you will find lots of different ebooks listed.

The next step is to select a few examples that match
closely to your idea or topic area. Bring the auction up,
and now for the trick…

eBay provides great detail into auctions by member,
including a complete detailed list of auctions and outcome
by member.

So, what you want to do is simply scan the members holding
active auctions - selecting the option “search all auctions
by this member” and viola, you will get a picture of
activity from this member.

Using this information you can judge if there are two sales
of their product each day or 20. The idea is not to get
an actual, accurate count, but rather a sense of how many
copies are moving through their auction.

You may be shocked by some of the results you see. Any
existing ebook, report, course, training, audio or video
that has activity daily - especially with multiple copies
sold daily, will help to validate your market and topic
area.

Don’t leave me now lest my sweet breath would cease
Don’t leave me now else my whole body would freeze
Don’t leave me now that I’m crying on my hurting knees
Else I may never give my heart away again on lease

If you leave me right here and walk away from my life
I’d not even think about slitting my throat with a knife
This life will still go on and I’ll definitely remain alive
But without you right here how do you want me to survive

Can’t you see I trust you with every bit and inch of my heart
And never ever want to imagine the both of us live apart
If you leave today I shall never find another to believe
That’s why I’m still begging you to stay and never leave

A common headache among the majority of successful Cybermarketers is the use of the concept of giving something away for free - yes, without cost - before receiving anything in return.

‘Founding’ fathers of the internet designed it as a networking tool for freely sharing information among scientists, Doctors, military personel and government officials. More recently, adventurous entrepreneurs have started to venture online. And many people have discovered that giving things away for free in much the same way, can eventually lead to sales and profits.

One of the most common strategies Internet Entrapreneurs use to give away useful information (Page Content) that interests their target markets. Valuable free info can encourage new visitors to stay much longer on your site and bring them back time arter time. But they can also be turned off if you hit them too early with blatant sales pitching.

Tools for dispensing free page content also vary widely: ezines; web sites; email and web-based discussion groups; downloadable e-books, and so on. Other common freebies (Giveaways) include software; web space; and a wide variety of other products and services. Click Link below To see example:

http://www.smallbusinesshomesite.com/products/department1.cfm

New ideas and ways of sharing freely are being thought up all the time.

The giveaways or freebies are just a sample that gives a foretaste of what a visitor can get if they become a full fledged subscriber/paying customer. Shareware is a well known model of this type of method, many features are disabled. If you want all the bells and whistles, you must upgrade to the paid version of the software.

Also consider one of my own offers for example, I have a password-protected directory containing increasing amounts of material from my own subscription website, Small Business HomeSite.com, for which i charge a reasonable fee to gain access to details at: http://www.smallbusinesshomesite.com/products/item11.cfm

You don’t have to take my word for it that you’ll find value there for doing your business marketing online.

Visitors are free to absorb as mush information as they can handle. At the same time it helps them get to know me better, and gives a small taste of what’s available to paid SBHomesite subscribers, if they happen to be interested.

The real motive - let’s face facts:

This concept of sharing isn’t totally naive of motive. Almost invariably, the intent is either to attract prospects in the hope of eventually gaining a paying customer, or to draw traffic for selling advertising to commercial enterprises.

Successful Internet Marketing is not entirely a charitable guru that sits atop a hill in the middle of money town.com. Giving away advice, content or other freebies, without a direct or indirect commercial motive of one sort or another.

In other words, if it didn’t somehow benefit them, they wouldn’t - and probably could’n't afford to - continue doing it. After all, entrepreneurs like you and I are out to earn a honest profit - even a living - from this Big, Wild Web. We can’t reasonably be expected to give away the whole of the business without any compensation whatsoever.

The Benefit of giving away freely - giving away a freebie can create a win/win situation. The giver builds trust and goodwill, as well as likely gains a repeat visitor and potential future customer, and the recipient gets something something of value at no cost.

As you can gather by all this free giving away, as with many things given away online for free, you get what you pay for. They offer little or no real value. The trick is to find one or more freebies with real perceived value to your prospects. By sharing (some) things freely online, before asking anything in return, you’ll find that it pays off better than the opposing concept of all take and no give.
